On December 17th all grade 12 students were given the chance to attend William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in our school’s assembly hall. The famous playwright tells the story of four aristocratic adolescents from ancient Athens who, under the influence of magical spells in a miraculous forest, struggle to find their true love.
It was performed by the “White Horse Theatre Group” who had condensed the original, rather lengthy plot into an amusing 80-minute play, which kept the students’ level of attention up high until the very end. The main reason for that was, of course, the great and enthusiastic performance by the group of four native British actors. Their great timing at changing costumes and their ability to express the emotions of the different characters almost made the audience forget that the play had originally been written for at least three times the number of actors.
The four young and professionally trained actors made the best of the few pieces of equipment they had on stage, entertained their audience well and made us laugh, even though Shakespeare’s old fashioned English (called early-modern English) was, at times, hard to understand word for word.
All in all, the performance of this comedy was a very enjoyable way to provide the pupils with an insight into Shakespeare’s work. Comparing “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” to modern novels and movies makes quite clear that the topics that attract people’s interest have not really changed over the last 400 years: an all-time classic!
